TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Senior Gerindra Party member Prabowo Subianto has declared his willingness to run for president in 2014.
"I accept the mandate by you as a last duty as a soldier to advance this nation," he said at a party event in Jakarta on Tuesday night.
Hundreds of people from the Joint Action to Support Prabowo as Indonesia One (KAPPI-1) officially asked Prabowo to run for president in the 2014 election.
The meeting of the former Indonesian Youth and Student Action Union (KAPPI) 66 was attended by representatives from all over Indonesia.
Prabowo admitted that he actually had wanted a break from the world of politics. "But I’m furious to see the current conditions. As such I accept the mandate from you, my brothers and sisters," said Prabowo, also chair of the Indonesian Farmers Association (HKTI).
The former Commander of the Army Strategic Reserve Command said he would make himself an agent of change; not a boss; not a leader; not a king.
Meanwhile, KAPPI chair Bambang Heryanto said that Prabowo has made many changes.
Prabowo's candidacy, he said, is in line with the spirit of the three demands of the people voiced by KAPPI 66, especially the demand for lower prices and improved welfare.
"Today, the idea of prosperity for common people is still far from a reality. And welfare will be realized through the decisive and visionary leadership that Prabowo Subianto has," he said.
