SINGAPORE — The authorities are revoking the work pass of a Malaysian who was involved in both illegal gatherings over Malaysia’s election results at the Merlion Park on Wednesday and Saturday last week.

Out of the 21 Malaysians who participated in last Saturday’s gathering, the visit passes of two others have also been cancelled, the police said in a statement late last night.

IRAS will not need to obtain court order to get bank info, govt finalising FATCA deal with US


SINGAPORE — The Government is beefing up measures that will make it easier for Singapore to share information on potential tax evaders with other countries as it intensifies efforts to stamp out tax evasion and money-laundering here.

Under the measures — expected to take effect by next year — the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) will not need a court order to get bank and trust information from financial institutions. The number of jurisdictions Singapore can exchange information with will also be increased.

In addition, Singapore will ink an agreement with the United States to help financial institutions in Singapore comply with the US Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), which comes into effect next year.

Review to focus on duties, finances, arrangements when town councils change hands

SINGAPORE — Ruling out a return to the days when town councils islandwide were run by the Housing and Development Board (HDB), National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan nevertheless announced yesterday that the town council framework would be reviewed.

The review — to be headed by Senior Minister of State Lee Yi Shyan — would focus on three areas: The duties and responsibilities of town councils vis-a-vis the HDB, the adequacy of town councils’ sinking funds and long-term financial sustainability, as well as the handover arrangements and the transition when the town councils change hands.

SINGAPORE — As long as there is no “sustained” human-to-human transmission of the H7N9 bird flu virus or the novel coronavirus, the risk of an outbreak in Singapore will remain low, said Health Minister Gan Kim Yong.

Mr Gan was speaking in Parliament yesterday, which saw five Members of Parliament (MP) flagging concerns about H7N9 and the novel coronavirus.

The most likely source of the H7N9 outbreak in China is from infected poultry and contaminated live poultry markets, while the source of the novel coronavirus — which has been reported in the Middle East and Europe — is still unclear.
